Brief Introduction

The School of Social Science of Shanghai University is primarily engaged in providing public courses in the fields of political science, such as Marxist philosophy, political economics, international politics and economics, law, and Mao Zedong’s and Deng Xiaoping’s theories and thoughts.
 
The school is divided into five teaching groups, including Philosophy, Principles of Marxism, Studies on Mao Zedong Thought, Thought Moral Culture and Law Base and Modern Chinese History. In addition, it operates two research centers for Philosophy of Science & Technology and the History of Shanghai Immigrants. There is also a training center for a PhD’s degree students and eight master’s degree students and an adult education department. In 2007, more than 130 graduate students studied on campus, and 300 students attended classes offered by the adult education department.
 
There are currently 84 teaching staff at the School of Social Science, among whom seven are professors and 18 are assitant professors. Twenty-two of them hold PhD degrees, and 56 percent of the staff is under the age of 40.
 
Wang tianen is the Dean of the School, Professor, and Ph.D. He is also the concurrent Professor of the Philosophy Department in East China Normal University, Researcher of the Institute of Chinese Modern thought and culture in East China Normal University (the humanities social sciences key research base of the Ministry of Education).
 
He has won the second prize for Shanghai municipal teaching achievement; the third prize of the outstanding achievement paper for Shanghai fourth session of Deng Xiaoping Theory research and propaganda; the interior discussion outstanding achievement prize for Shanghai sixth session of philosophy and social sciences; and the nomination prize of the sixth session of national books prize.
 
The school is honored to have Yu Guangyuan, a well-known Chinese economist, as its honorary dean.
 
In recent years, significant achievements have been made in the field of research on applied philosophy, science and technical production forces, and SOE reform. We have successfully completed three state-level projects and various other projects assigned by the municipality and Education Commission. More than 10 academic books have been published and over 100 papers have been released.
