Brief Introduction

Dated back to 1978 as the Law Department of the Branch School of Fudan University after its resumption of enrollment, Shanghai University Law School is a vanguard center for legal education and research, with focus on financial laws, intellectual property rights and international trade laws. After years of amalgamation and splits, the former School of Intellectual Property affiliated with the new Law School in March 2003, with more diversified and dynamic faculty, ready for a brighter future.

The School is composed of three instructional systems, namely the School of Intellectual Property, Department of Financial Law and Law Department, as well as seven research centers and institutions, which are Center for Civil and Commercial Law, Institute of Intellectual Property, Center for Economic and Financial Law, Law Institute, Center for Criminal Law and Crime, Center for Laws in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and Center for Adult Legal Education. There are more than fifty full-time faculty members in the School.

The School focuses the undergraduate programs predominantly on the financial law and intellectual property law. As for postgraduate programs, the School offers master's degree in jurisprudence, science of constitutional and administrative law, and criminal jurisprudence. At the moment the School engages in applying for the granting body of the primary discipline of jurisprudence for master's degree and the authority to confer master's degree in economic law. All this contributes to the School’s ultimate goal of ranking as a research-oriented school with a wide range of fields and disciplines of legal study as well as clear-cut focuses of research.

The School is home to seven full-time and five adjunct professors, thirteen associated professors, and thirty lecturers and assistant professors, with an average age of forty. More than thirty of them have already obtained their doctoral or master's degrees. Beyond the classroom, the faculty members are at the cutting edge of legal scholarship and practice and have taken up many research projects at the national, provincial and local level, which offers new exciting perspectives on and contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

To make the graduates competitive, adaptable and knowledgeable in their future legal practice (as is needed by the burgeoning society), the School attaches great significance to applying theories into practice in both teaching and learning, and strives to integrate legal knowledge with knowledge of other disciplines. The School employs case study, “real-world” activities like arguing cases before simulated courts, legal consultation exercise in case of corporation investment or merge, as well as speech competitions and debates to make students agile and eloquent. In addition, the Schools offers students courses in both Chinese and English language skills to better equip them for their future career.

The School’s alumni advance in diverse careers in legal practice, the judiciary, government and other public service, academia; and business, especially in corporations, banks, securities companies, trust funds, insurance companies to government bureaus, courts, procuratorate and so on.
